Star Parker: With unemployment claims averaging 463,000 since January, it is clear to anyone with a good business sense that it's the private sector that creates real jobs.
Unemployment claims continue to rise
Initial unemployment claims rose last week to the highest level since April, indicating that employers are still laying off workers and that hiring still remains very weak.
The U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday that new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 479,000, a gain of another 19,000 when analysts had expected a slight decrease. This represents two increases in three weeks.
With homes sales and construction still slumping after the expiration of the popular homebuyers' tax credit, Americans are still spending wisely, determined to same more of their money and reduce their debt.
This economic data has further raised concerns that the federal government's stimulus efforts are not working.
Star Parker, congressional candidate in California's 37th district, indicated that this economic news reflected what she has been saying during her campaign, that "Government spending is out of control and when I get to Washington I will work with others to rein in that spending, as well as working with the private sector to create real jobs."
"With unemployment claims averaging 463,000 since January, it's clear to anyone with a good business sense that it's the private sector that creates real jobs," Parker continued. "While the president continues to claim that we've ‘turned the corner' on the economy, private sector employers continue to slash jobs in order to cut costs. And this is without Obama's cap and trade scheme."
"Small businesses continue to be the backbone of this nation. Only when these small businesses begin to hire in extensive numbers will we see a real return to a stable economy," Parker said.
